"User-added datasets" shown in Guide 8.0

Last updated 25 February 2002

Guide has a rather elaborate set of features that enable users to add display of almost any plain-text astronomical dataset that contains RA/dec position values. Write a little file to tell Guide such things as which columns contain RA minutes, declination degrees, magnitude, and so forth, and you can get Guide to show that dataset.

Many people have already done this for over a hundred datasets, and these are already included for you on the Guide 8.0 CDs. They are listed below.

In many cases, links are provided to the text posted when the datasets were first added to Guide, giving details as to what the datasets are and why you would want to use them. These details often mention things such as "to use this, download the following and do thus-and-such". Ignore this. All that applied to Guide 7 and earlier versions. The following datasets are all provided on the Guide 8 disks, with no downloads needed (except in some cases to get updated catalogs.)

Radio surveys:

  • 1.4-GHz Northern Sky Catalog
  • 6C Radio Sources I
  • 6C Radio Sources II
  • 6C Radio Sources III
  • 6C Radio Sources IV
  • 6C Radio Sources Va
  • 6C Radio Sources Vb
  • 6C Radio Sources VI
  • Molonglo Ref Cat (408 MHz)
  • Parkes Radio Sources
  • Rees 38-MHz Radio Survey
  • Atlas pages:

  • AAVSO Atlas pages
  • Atlas Stellarum pages
  • Falkauer Atlas pages
  • Herald-Bobroff (H-B) Atlas
  • Millennium Star Atlas pages
  • Selected Area pages
  • Uranometria 2000 pages
  • These enable display of the boundaries of pages from the atlases to appear on-screen. Quite handy at times for figuring out which page would show a given object.

    Variable stars:

  • AAVSO Finder Charts
  • Cool Galactic Carbon Stars II
  • Cool Galactic Carbon Stars III
  • Cataclysmic Variables (Downes & Shaara)
  • New Suspected Variables Suppl.

  • Quasars/AGNs:

  • Active Galactic Nuclei
  • BL Lac
  • Quasars
  • Quasars, Rejected
  • Digital Sky Survey plates
  • DSS-2 'I' plates
  • DSS-2 'J' plates
  • DSS-2 'P' plates
  • DSS-2 'R' plates
  • DSS-2 'S' plates
  • GSC Plates
  • Palomar Observatory plates
  • RealSky North plates
  • RealSky South plates
  • USNO A1.0 plates (POSS I)
  • The above eleven datasets allow display of the areas covered by assorted sky surveys in assorted photometric bands. You can also click on the displayed plates to get data about them (exposure date/time and duration, etc.)

    Double/Multiple stars:

  • Double stars: AL 100 list
  • CCDM (Components Doubles & Multiples)
  • Washington Double Star Catalogue 2001
  • Binaries with orbits

  • Photometry:

  • Arne Henden standards
  • Brian Skiff's photometry data
  • Guide Star Photometric Catalog
  • Hubble Deep Field stars
  • UBV Means [Mermilliod 1991]
  • Alignment stars for assorted commercial telescopes:

  • JMI-III Setup stars
  • LX200 alignment stars
  • LX200 reference stars
  • Sky Commander Alignment Stars
  • SS2000 alignment stars
  • Assorted deep-sky object catalogues:

  • Bennett Catalogue
  • Caldwell Catalog
  • Globular clusters (Harris 1999)
  • Herbig-Haro Catalogue
  • Herschel 400
  • M31 Globular clusters
  • LEDA Million galaxies
  • Open clusters (Lund catalog)
  • Southern Dark Clouds
  • UCAS Galaxies

  • Display of downloaded datasets:

  • 2MASS (2 Micron All-Sky Survey)
  • GSC-2.2 data (as ellipses)
  • GSC-2.2 data (as stars)
  • USNO A2.0 data (downloaded from ESO)
  • The above datasets are multi-gigabyte monsters not actually distributed with Guide. Instead, you can download areas of interest from Web servers, then show the data in Guide.

    Ephemeris/minor planet related:

  • Horizons (JPL) Ephemeris
  • NEOCP Objects
  • NEODyS Ephemeris
  • MPC observations
  • Virtual impactor ephemeris
  • These are not exactly "objects", but they are data minor planet observers sometimes wish to show on-screen.

Datasets shown on Earth maps (in eclipse mode, for example):

  • Country names
  • Guide users (geo mode only)
  • MPC stations
  • US cities (geo mode only)
  • Assorted items that don't fit the above categories:

  • Almagest
  • Atlas of Supernovae
  • Catalog of Nearby Stars
  • Constellation labels
  • Errata file
  • ICRF Galaxies
  • IMO Limiting Magnitude Field
  • Meteor Showers (IMO)
