"Pseudo-MPEC" for 2010 KQ = RK252A5

There has been a lot of speculation in various forums about why this object hasn't been identified. I've written up what I consider to be a good lay description of "how we know what we know, and why we don't know much more than that (yet)" here.

Topocentric ephemerides are available at the MPC's Minor Planet Ephemeris Service (MPES) and from JPL's Horizons WWW interface. The following ephemerides are geocentric, and just give you a general idea of the object's position.

It's clear that this object passed within about .038 AU of the Earth in August 1991. Before that, it's clear that it passed close to the Earth in April 1975. (The nominal distance is 252,000 km, with an error of about 40,000 km.) Given some recent results, plus the very visible effects of solar radiation pressure in my own analysis, I've had to give up on the hope that this was actually a rock. It is, almost certainly, space junk. (This link also considers the possibility that the object might collide with the Earth in a few decades. I haven't focused on that. Note, though, that the article was written back when we had somewhat less data than we do now.)

It may have left the Earth/Moon system in 1975, or it may have been launched earlier and have either passed us by or been temporarily captured then. The data we have thus far isn't solid enough to say. (If it was launched earlier, it would have been in the early 1960s or late 1950s. The energy of this object is such that it'll always be in an orbit with a period of roughly one year, meaning that it has encounters with the earth once every decade or two. So it couldn't, for example, have been launched in 1970, then come back five years later.)

The object should continue to be observable through August. By then, we'll have a more solid orbit, but still probably won't be able to make a definite identification, or even know if it's a 1975-era object or an early 1960s/late 1950s object.

With the observations below, I ran several Monte Carlo variant orbits, and got encounters on 1975 April 20, plus or minus a week, at a distance of 252,000 km, plus or minus about 40,000 km. The area/mass ratio can now be determined to be .0077 +/- .001 m^2/kg, which is a good match to that determined for the LCROSS Centaur booster. (More data has gradually refined that area/mass ratio, and still better results should be expected as we get more data.)

I've dug through the Satellite Situation Reports, and the only candidate I can find for a 1975-era launch is that of Helios-1. Helios-1 itself went into a very unusual orbit, but the Centaur booster (international designation 1974-097C) and a piece of "debris" (international designation 1974-097D) are indicated as having gone into heliocentric orbits. The brightness and area/mass ratio are consistent with a Centaur. But I should emphasize that I don't even know if it was launched in 1974 or 1975; it may have been launched in the early 1960s or late 1950s, then passed by us in 1975. More data ought to give us a better handle on those possibilities.

It may be that, before this object before it leaves our neighborhood in August, we'll be able to track it all the way back to the launch of Helios-1 in December 1974. I am getting less hopeful about that, though. We'd need enough data to track it back to the April 1975 departure from the earth/moon system, accurately enough to show it making an orbit or two or three before then, and coming very close to the earth near the launch date of Helios-1. That would require a very precise trajectory. I don't think we'll get it. For one thing, the effects of solar radiation pressure vary as the object tumbles and the paint fades, and we can't really model this. There are presumably Yarkovsky and YORP effects on the object, which would be difficult, if not impossible, to model (though I've hopes the folks at JPL may be able to do so... if they can, I think it'll be the first time those effects have been measured for an artificial object.)
