"Pseudo-MPEC" for WE0913A = DSCOVR object = 2015-007B = NORAD 40391

This object is close enough for topocentric parallax to make a difference of half a degree or so. You should click here to get topocentric ephemerides from the MPC's DASO Page .

A more recent version of this page, with subsequent observations, is available. As you will see on that page, the lunar flyby on 2016 January 17 changed the orbit drastically, bringing the orbital period down from over 40 days to 19 days. I think there may have been a gas release as well; I'm not able to fit post-flyby data to pre-flyby data as well as I'd like.

Eric Christensen notes (concerning the 2015 March 16 data): "Note that the variation in magnitude is apparently real."

The following orbits use a two-parameter solution, A1 giving an outward force and A2 an "along-orbit" force. This model, adapted from the Marsden-Sekanina model used for comets, provides a considerably better fit than the usual outward term for solar radiation pressure. The outward component indicates a lightweight object, such as a rocket booster.

Even with the extra two parameters, the fit is poor. That tends to be the case with rocket boosters; solar radiation pushes them around in ways that I, at least, can't model.

The pre-flyby orbit is a poor match to the one DSCOVR actually had (perigee near the earth, apogee near a million kilometers). But you'll see that it does go past the moon on 2015 February 14, at the same time DSCOVR did. So the identification seems quite solid.

It does not, as of 2018 October, seem likely that this object will either hit the moon (I keep hoping for a free LCROSS!) or earth, nor be ejected from the Earth-Moon system in the next few years. The lunar flyby on 2016 January 17 turned out (based on subsequent data) to be at about 25876 +/- 2 km. Nominally, there will be an encounter with the moon on 2021 Sep 19 at 17000 +/- 2000 km, lifting it up from an orbit with a period of about twenty days to something closer to two months, and possibly from there to an heliocentric orbit. Though much of this is a little speculative, and depends on what the non-gravitational forces do.
