"Pseudo-MPEC" for 2023 NM

This contains all data from the original MPEC, plus the following Daily Orbit Update, plus six observations sent to me by Eric Christensen that didn't make the DOU. They were probably rejected because they don't fit unless you account for solar radiation pressure. I inquired about this, in hopes of getting them published, but the object is now retracted and therefore no longer handled by MPC at all. (The six observations below with a blank reference field are the ones MPC didn't publish.)
With the CSS precovery data from April and May, this is clearly an artsat. A gravity-only solution has 2.6" mean residuals and some outliers. The area/mass ratio is right in the ballpark of what you'd expect for junk.
I'm hoping this leads to PanSTARRS recoveries from mid-March and/or mid-February, to give us data from just before it entered the Earth-Moon system. It looks as if it passed by most recently in March 2008, at 0.03 AU (max magnitude 23.2, so no hope of precovery from back then). Before that, there were flybys at greater distances in 1995, 1982, and 1969. With just a simple radial force, the orbit is well-determined and the object never passed near the earth. So I assume there were some non-radial forces acting on the object (which is unsurprising, but does complicate the problem of figuring out when it left the Earth-Moon system.) In particular, even a small Yarkovsky force can pile up over five decades, allowing for significant tweaks at the 1969 end.
As the ephems show, the object will get fairly bright (V~17.2) in early October. That may help with physical observations that could give us some idea of which bit of junk we're looking at here. After that, it crawls up to the Earth-Sun L1 point (the one where we can't see it at all), then back out to heliocentric orbit.

In theory, the object should be within this distance of the nominal RA/dec 67% of the time, within twice that distance 95% of the time, and within three times that distance 99.7% of the time. In practice, astrometric errors are not actually Gaussian, which means these uncertainties are sometimes over- or underestimated. So you may have to look farther, or not nearly as far, as the uncertainties say. The object will probably be offset from nominal somewhere along the indicated position angle, especially if the orbit is well determined.
