"Pseudo-MPEC" for 2020-047A = EMM-Hope

There is also a pseudo-MPEC for the booster for this mission, and an earlier pseudo-MPEC for this spacecraft based on observations as it left the earth-moon system in late June 2020.
On 26 August, this spacecraft had a predicted magnitude of 25.4. I had been so confident it was unobservable that I'd not posted data for identifying it past 9 August. So it came as a great surprise when the object was reported as object C332UJ2, at mag 18 and getting brighter. That's about a thousand times brighter than predicted.
Here's what I think happened. If you look at a picture of the spacecraft, the antenna is slightly tilted relative to the solar panels. If we assume the antenna points at Earth (seems pretty safe) and the phase angle (the angle between sun and earth as seen from EMM-Hope) is twice that angle, and that the solar panels are kept oriented to collect as much sunlight as possible (again seems like a good idea), you'll get a glint.
The phase angle was about 47 degrees when the recent glint was seen, so I'll bet that the antenna is tilted about 23.5 degrees relative to the solar panels. That angle was probably chosen to keep the power at or above some minimum overall power as the spacecraft went to Mars and the phase angle and distance from the sun changed.
Ideally, the dish would move to point to the Earth and the solar panels would be kept broadside to the sun... but you'd have a moving part that could fail; it was probably easier to make the antenna fixed and just make the solar panels a little bigger.
I looked for other cases where the phase angle would reach 47 degrees, but it'll be less than that for the remainder of the trip to Mars.
The object was again misclassified as a possible NEO on 2020 August 28, when ZTF (Zwicky Transient Facility) picked it up and gave it the temporary designation ZTF0E07. These observations, made at a distance of 12.18 million kilometers, are (I think) the most distant optical observations of an artificial object, edging out the last observations of Elon Musk's Tesla (and the booster to which it remained attached), which were made at a distance of about 11.66 million km.
The new orbit doesn't line up with the "old" one from a month earlier, presumably due to a maneuver. The Mars flyby distance has dropped quite a bit.
