"Pseudo-MPEC" for 2019-040B = NORAD 44433 = Spektr-RG Booster

This is the booster for the Spektr-RG X-ray and gamma-ray observatory. Like the observatory, it is headed to the earth-sun L2 point. Unlike the observatory, 2019-040B will reach L2, slow down a little, and then fall into an heliocentric orbit. It should come back and be visible sometime in early June 2038. (It'll be in a slightly higher orbit than ours. We'll complete about nineteen orbits around the sun in the intervening 19 years; it'll complete only 18, so we basically "gain a lap" on it. On its return, it will reach mag 22.1, with a nominal uncertainty of a few arcminutes. I expect it'll be off by more than that -- artsats don't "behave" well -- but I'd be reasonably confident it will be swept up by LSST or its successor.)

Jost Jahn has produced a video showing both objects moving across the sky.

The early observations indicated a surprisingly high area/mass ratio. I found this difficult to believe; it was probably just due to some leftover propellant leaking. (Freshly-launched objects sometimes do odd things before they "settle down".) Further data seems to confirm that, and we're now getting a more realistic AMR.

Final observations were made of the object on 2019 September 21. In theory, the object could have been tracked after that, but it probably wouldn't have helped very much; the existing astrometry was quite good. (I mostly wanted the data to ensure that it could be found and identified in 2038, and we've accomplished that.)

TLEs are available for this object and for the Spektr-RG spacecraft (and for most of the other objects listed on these pages.) The TLEs for this booster run out on 2019 September 29. After that, the object is in a hyperbolic orbit relative to the Earth, and the SGP4/SDP4 model used with TLEs can no longer be used.
