[guide-user] Problems connecting telescope from guide9.1 with the new ASCOM 6.5 platform

Dear Bill,

I am having trouble getting Guide 9.1 to run with Maxim DL and recognize an ASCOM scope on a new PC. I really like Guide and have been using it for around 20 years now. I get a message saying, "You have not yet configured your telescope type and settings" and it will not synch with Maxim controlling the mount.

I first thought it was a recent update to ASCOM but I installed the previous version that WAS working on my old PC to no avail.

Then I found the email below that sounded like a similar problem. But I cold not find the "dynamic.exe" or even the "temp" folder.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Joaquin,

You are right, the problem is (I am almost certain) on Guide's end.

To be honest, my understanding of ASCOM has never been all that great. I took some of the example code, put it together in 2009, and it worked, and I've not touched it since then for fear of breaking something.

However, I got an e-mail today from "Peter" (dunno a last name), saying that debugging on his end revealed a stack overflow problem. The code I'd put together had a 2009-era stack size of 32 KBytes. It's unclear as to whether we need 256K or a megabyte now, but in either case, we're thinking that stack size is probably the issue.

Which is good. It means that if you use this file :

https://www.projectpluto.com/temp/dynamic.exe

(about 45 KBytes), replacing an existing file in your Guide folder, things will probably work. It's exactly the same executable, except compiled with a larger stack size.

It is not entirely certain that this will solve the problem.
It's been eleven years, and some other incompatibility may have been introduced. But there definitely appears to be a stack overflow, so this is a good thing to try.
